This season marks a new era of Covenanter baseball. After 7 seasons playing as the North Hills RP church (2000-2007), and 9 seasons playing a combined team of members of the North Hills and Grace RP churches, in 2017 North Hills and Grace each fielded their own team. The North Hills Covenanters are a younger crew this year than in years past.

Both teams sported blue T-shirts for this one, but our blue got out in front on back-to-back home runs by Josh and Isaac in the top of the 1st. Unfortunately, it was all Christian Community blue for the next few innings, as they put up 18 runs through 4 - several of those on two long balls to left.

North Hills settled down though, and the bats came to life late - outscoring CC 10-7 in the final 4 1/2 innings. Ed went 3-3 with a walk in his first US games after returning from down under, and Josh and Isaac each hit one more homer later in the game. However, it was too much of a swamp (as was left field) to dig out of on this night.

The Covenanters were a little shorthanded on this night, but there were glimpses of what could turn out to be a bright future. New Life took advantage, getting out to a 12-0 lead before North Hills batted in the bottom half of the first. Not even the cameo return of hall-of-famer Jeremiah could turn this one around. The score between the 2nd and 6th innings was 7-5 in favor of New Life, as North Hills settled down and were able to manage on defense while getting a few walks, hits, and runs of their own. At one point, Titus, Emerson, and Adam combined for the youngest double play combination in league history, and each of them hit better than in the first game of the season. But New Life broke it apart in the 7th, putting an official end to the hopes of raising the blue banner this night.

Tonight marked another important moment in a historic 2017 season. For the first time in the Gospel Fellowship league, two RP churches faced off against one another. The North Hills Covenanters came out swinging against Grace Reformed scoring 4 in the first inning on several clutch two-out base hits. Grace came back with 4 in the bottom half, and remained solid on defense, with the likes of Ian, JP, Bill and returning hall-of-famer Chris M. manning the infield. Jordan pitched the next 8 innings of shutout baseball, and the Covenanters in peach (the color of Grace's new uniforms) pulled away with a a couple of innings of solid hitting near the end. JP homered to cap it off in the 8th. A lot of fun was had by all, with quite a few fans coming out to cheer on their respective team.

The Covenanters faced off against New Life tonight for the second time this season. After giving up 2 in the first, the men in blue started the second with 4 straight hits, and after rattling Lee, New Life's starter, for a couple more walks and fielder's choices, took a 3-2 lead. After a 1-2-3 bottom of the second, the New Life crew came back with 2 in the 3rd, and broke it open with 7 more in the 4th inning. Even after Isaac came late and swapped out for Ed, North Hills couldn't mount a full comeback. New Life scored 6 more in the 7th, one of their hard-hitting lefties belting one deep to right field to cap it off.

Tonight featured a doubleheader of two 7-inning games, one of these a rainout-makeup from earlier in the season. In game 1, the Covenanters started out with a blast, capped by a 3-run homer by Isaac in the 1st. First Baptist came back with 4 in the first, but didn't stop there. Their team was able to hit to all fields, and hit they did in the first game - with a 10-run 3rd inning and a 13-run 4th inning. This game was called after 5, in order to have more time for game 2.

In game 2, Byron started his first game of the season, and the Covenanters started hot again - with 6 hits and a walk in the first to drive in 5 runs. First Baptist came back once more, with 9 in the first two innings, and another 11 through the next 4. North Hills battled back though, with Evan going 5-5 (8 for 8 total on the night), and Emerson going 4-5, and a 6-run 7th inning, the RP squad was only down by 5 coming up in the bottom of the 7th. Despite loading the bases with 1 out, it wasn't the night to raise the blue banner, as First Baptist held on for the win.

This game was another historic moment in the 2017 Covenanter season - but it almost didn't happen. Significant rain forecast for the day necessitated a preemptive move of the picnic and removal of most festivities that went along with the game. However, by the grace of God, the Devlin Park field held up well enough despite the morning rain, and we were able to play. A good crowd (including TFY kids) came to cheer on their teams, and Psalm 100D was sung before the start of the game.

After each team scored 1 in the first, Grace jumped ahead with a 6-run third inning, and added 5 more in the 3rd thanks in part to a Jordan inside-the-park homer. North Hills bounced back with their best offensive run of the season, scoring 8 in the 3rd off Faith, including both Frank and Hugh scoring from their first plate appearances of the season (and in Frank's case - ever). Jeff held Grace close from that point on, giving up only 3 more over the next 3 innings while North Hills added 2 more in the bottom of the 6th with RBIs from Sam, who went 4-4 on the day. However, Grace again put up 4 in the 7th (Jordan's second inside-the-park homer of the day), and North Hills left the bases loaded in both the 7th and 8th innings without a run. Rain came before the start of the 9th, and cut short a chance for a Covenanter comeback.

The post-game picnic was moved to the North Hills church fellowship hall, and a good time was had by all. Consensus is to make this a yearly event, and plans are in the works for a bigger event (if the rain holds off) next season.

The Covenanters came out to play a doubleheader on this night, with the largest crew of the season. The message arrived that Gospel Fellowship was not coming to play, but only after coach Dave had shut down and left for the field.

So in old-school fashion, coaches Dave and Jeff picked teams for what would become a memorable 9 on 9 scrimmage game. Jeff took the mound for his team, which jumped out to an early 2-0 lead. Dave's team battled back with a 5-run second inning, capped by a 3-run double from Luke. Singles from Matthew B., Matthew L., and Jeff in the 4th brought the game to a 7-7 tie, where it would stay for the next few innings. Byron found his groove on the mound from then on, only giving up 2 more runs the entire game. Ethan and Titus singled and scored for their respective teams in the 7th, and in the 8th, Jeff's team went ahead on a Harry Metzger RBI base-hit. Dave's team wouldn't give in though, and Evan crushed a triple in the 9th. Emerson followed with a run-scoring single, and we went to extra innings. After both teams got runners to scoring position but failed to score in the 10th, Evan doubled to lead off the 11th, and Luke drove him home for the game-winning run.

Shouts of joy were heard clear to McFann Road, and the Blue Banner was raised for the first time this season. Pastor Metzger went 4-8 in his first game in 8 years, and Matthew B. went 4-6 in his unofficial debut. Evan started and ended a slump - starting 0 for 5 but then delivering two key extra-base hits that helped win the game for Dave's squad. Nearly the whole crew went out for the celebration ice cream at Hammer's - with Karaoke night and all.

All season the Covenanters have battled, and tonight was an epic one. The RP's in blue fought on, despite Evan at short taking a bad bounce where the sun doesn't shine, Byron at third taking a bounce in the throat, and John discovering a hornet's nest when going for a ball in left-center. Christian Community went ahead early, 6-3 after 2 innings, but North Hills came back with 4 in the third, including Ed's 3-run double. The other men in blue (Christian Community also sports blue T-shirts), answered with 3 more in the 4th and breaking it open with 9 in the 5th - one of two homers on the night by their pitcher. North Hills quietly kept hitting though... with 11 runs on 14 hits in the 4th, 5th, and 6th. After ending the 6th tied at 18, Dave walked and scored in the 7th, but Christian Community came back with 2 in the 8th. Luke singled and later scored on another Ed single - deadlocking the game once more at 20. Jeff, drenched in sweat in his 20th inning pitching between this game and last, held down CC, but North Hills went down 1-2-3 in the 9th. CC managed to bring one home in the 10th, and not even Pastor Harry (pinch-hitting in the 10th for his first regular season at-bat in 8 years) could get us to victory this night. A hard-fought game was still celebrated at Hammer's afterward.

Coming off two amazing games of extra inning baseball, the Covenanters faced a David-and-Goliath matchup in the first round of the playoffs this season. New Life finished with an 8-3 record, and were the league's second-best team the season before, behind only the combined North Hills/Grace team.

North Hills started slowly, with only one hit the first time through the lineup. Meanwhile, New Life pounced on North Hills for 13 in the first 4 innings, including homers from their clean-up hitter and Lee, their pitcher and coach. Lee lost some control later in the game, walking the bases loaded to start the 6th, and giving up 4 in the 8th, but the strong hitting by New Life carried this one away.

With a group of good young talent, the Covenanters look to build on this season and raise the blue banner (and ice cream cones at Hammer's) many more times in seasons to come.

Directions to Gospel Fellowship Field

Take Route 8 North past the turnpike exit, past the Red Belt, and past where it joins with Route 228.

You will drive up a hill past the intersection of Route 8 and Route 228 with Hammer’s, an ice cream shop, on your left. Continuing on, you’ll eventually pass Glade Run Presbyterian Church on your right. You will go through one stop light (I can’t recall if this is before or after the church).

You will eventually come to a slight downhill and long straightaway stretch, and at this point, you may see signs for both McFann Road (it’s a yellow sign on your right), and for Gospel Fellowship Church (I believe this sign is on your left). Turn left onto McFann road. Once you’re on McFann, as you come over the crest of a small hill, on the right will be a parking lot, and then a gravel/rock driveway going down a sharp but short grade (it is hard to see the driveway from the road). Turn down here, and park in the gravel lot – you will walk across the creek to get to the field.

You will know if you’ve missed McFann Road if you hit the intersection where Route 228 disconnects with Route 8 and continues eastward. Also, the Starr Lumber complex is just past the turnoff for the field.

You will know if you missed the entrance to the field off of McFann Road if you make it to Gospel Fellowship church itself.

Softball Overview

  • Our softball team is a joint effort with the Grace Reformed Presbyterian Church to provide fun and fellowship for young and old.
  • We participate in a league of Christian churches in the Mars / Glade Run area north of Pittsburgh.  The league is sponsored by Gospel Fellowship Church, and we play at their field.  It is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and show love toward our brothers and sisters in Christ.
  • We typically play a 12  game schedule, and usually at least one playoff game (almost all teams make the playoffs).
  • We welcome all players (men and women, children older than 13) of all abilities and backgrounds to come and play.
  • Our record the past 5 seasons (2010-2014), counting playoff games, is 31-30.  We have made it to the championship 3 times in that span, but lost each time.  Come out and help us break that streak!
